With a public service labor practice for 30 years, Ingerman Smith’s attorneys deal with over 250 labor organizations at the local school district, college and municipal agency levels. As a result of our length of practice, the diversity of our clients, and the unions that represent our clients’ employees, we have a commanding base of labor and negotiations experience, particularly with labor unions and labor contract administration. John H. Gross, Esq., Senior Managing Partner of the Firm has negotiated scores of collective bargaining agreements with labor unions in some of the most difficult economic times facing municipalities and colleges. In addition, the team of Firm attorneys negotiating these agreements has been successful in stemming the costs associated with staffing to the benefit of the Firm's management clients.
The two hundred fifty labor unions and associations at the local school district, college and municipal levels that we deal with include faculty associations represented by New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) together with non-instructional unions including the Civil Service Employees Association, Service Employees International Union, the Teamsters, National Educational Association locals, and various independent unions that are not affiliated with the AFL-CIO.
The non-instructional unions we deal with range from single discipline bargaining units such as secretarial or custodial units to “wall-to-wall” units that contain all non-instructional personnel typically including custodial workers, maintenance workers, secretaries, food service, transportation and security employees. As a result, we have extensive experience in labor negotiations.
